211 GHG Information Management Systems
Many companies are taking action to manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a cause of climate change. Establishing a GHG Information Management System (IMS) is a critical and valuable step towards reducing staff burdens associated with developing a verifiable and auditable inventory, institutionalizing processes, enhancing data quality, streamlining reporting and increasing analytical robustness. This course will introduce fundamental concepts and processes for a GHG IMS in a project management framework from the early planning stages through system deployment. The purpose and objective of this course is to explain the fundamental concepts and processes for a GHG IMS, including project planning, identifying important organizational attributes and associated data to be monitored and measured, identifying critical GHG IMS functionality, translating those requirements to an overall GHG IMS design and strategies for implementation and deployment. The material in this course builds on the WRI-WBCSD GHG Corporate Protocol and the concepts from the GHG Management Institute “Basics of Organizational GHG Accounting” course. A Certificate of Participation is furnished at completion of the course. A Certificate of Proficiency is available for an additional fee and requires the passing of an exam. This course was designed with the assumption that most corporations will be purchasing a “pre-packaged” greenhouse gas information management system (GHG IMS) solution from a software vendor versus building a custom GHG IMS internally. Although most concepts within the course, such as planning, identifying GHG IMS requirements, deployment, etc. can be applied to building a custom GHG IMS, this course does not focus on the technical development of a custom GHG solution. COURSE LESSONS
Who should attend: Anyone with an interest in GHG management, in particular, GHG inventory managers, corporate environmental and sustainability managers and auditors. This course is designed for individuals that may have the following GHG IMS role: project managers, implementation consultants, system administrators (“power users”), GHG data managers, end users, etc. The course is not designed for IT professionals that will be developing custom GHG IMS solutions. Prerequisites: It is highly recommended that learners take the Basics of Organizational GHG Accounting or have prior GHG accounting experience prior to taking this course. Approximate number of working hours to complete: 16 to 20 Course Developer and Instructor: Steve McDonough, IHS Environment Availability: Runs quarterly – January, April, July, October (classes begin on the first of the month) |
