Michael
Gillenwater- Dean, GHG Management Institute
Michael Gillenwater is co-founder of the GHG Management Institute.
He is charged with developing and directing the overall instructional
program at the Institute.
He has spent much of his career focusing on the development of
the policies and infrastructure needed to produce highly credible
environmental information that can serve as the basis of market
and other compliance mechanisms, including measurement and verification
policies and management and reporting systems for greenhouse gases
and other ecosystem services.+++
Michael has worked on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change
since 1995. He co-established the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Program within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Michael’s
work at EPA concentrated on development of an overall system for
producing high quality greenhouse gas emission inventories and on
the international compliance process for doing so under the United
National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He was lead author
of the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks reports
published from 1997 through 2003.
Michael is listed on the rosters of technical experts and is actively
engaged in the work of the UNFCCC and as a lead author of several
IPCC reports. He developed and teaches the courses that certify
experts to serve on compliance review teams under the Kyoto Protocol.
He is also a core advisor to World Resources Institute and the World
Business Council on Sustainable Development for the revised edition
of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. He founded the Greenhouse Gas Experts
Network (www.ghgnetwork.org) and currently serves as its Executive
Director.
Most recently he was Director of the EcoRegistry® Program at
Environmental Resources Trust (ERT). Michael is currently at Princeton
University’s Science, Technology and Environmental Policy
Program while also serving as Director of Verification Policy (a
senior advisory role) for ERT and as a consultant and advisor to
the UNFCCC Secretariat, and UNDP. His research is focused renewable
and emission markets and on monitoring and verification issues with
for climate change policies. Prior to joining ERT, Michael was first
with the U.S. EPA’s Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation
and then EPA’s Clean Air Markets Division. He has also worked
for Sandia National Laboratories and ICF Consulting’s Global
Environmental Issues Group. He has a bachelors degree in mechanical
engineering from Texas A&M University and masters degrees in
environmental engineering and “Technology and Policy”
from MIT. He also spent a year at the University of Sussex as Fulbright
Scholar in Evolutionary Adaptive Systems.

Tom
Baumann - Director of Professional Programs, GHG Management Institute
Tom contributes to the development of many courses, including project-level, verification, CDP.
Tom Baumann is co-founder and CEO of ClimateCHECK. During his career, Tom has led progressively senior positions in the private sector, public sector and not-for-profit sector. He has 10 years of experience working with climate change and clean energy companies to support technical and management solutions that achieve the double dividend of environmental and economic benefits. +++
He has been a significant contributor to the development of the standards, tools, and systems to support GHG technologies as well as GHG credits for both voluntary and regulated markets. Tom has led many teams of climate change experts for major customers around the world, including work based on the ISO 14064 GHG Standards, WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol, and UNFCCC CDM projects.
Tom is the main author of the ISO 14064-2 International Standard for GHG Projects (www.iso.org), which has been adopted by various GHG initiatives including the Voluntary Carbon Standard (www.v-c-s.org), the GE-AES Greenhouse Gas Standard (www.ge-aes.com), the Government of Canada (www.ec.gc.ca), the Government of Canada (www.ec.gc.ca) and the Government of Alberta (www.environment.gov.ab.ca). ISO 14064-2 also forms part of industry and sectoral GHG guidelines including the IPIECA GHG project guidelines (www.ipieca.org).
Tom was also a significant contributor to the development of the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol for Projects (www.ghgprotocol.org) as best practice guidance on “how to do” GHG project accounting. Tom lead the development of several sector specific GHG protocols, based on the ISO 14064-2, WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol for Projects, and CDM Approved Methodologies. Tom also co-lead the development of training courses for GHG quantification and verification based on ISO 14064 and the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocols.
Prior to founding ClimateCHECK, Tom was Director of Climate Change Services for North America for Det Norske Veritas (www.dnv.com). Prior to DNV, Tom developed and implemented the System of Measurement And Reporting of Technologies (SMART) for the Government of Canada’s climate change Technology Early Action Measures Initiative (www.team.gc.ca) – a government fund having invested in more than 140 GHG technology demonstration projects with a total investment of more than $1.2 billion. The SMART has been adopted by Sustainable Development Technologies Canada (www.sdtc.ca), a leading green investment program. Tom has worked on techno-economic GHG models, strategic studies and market research.
Tom has a B.A. in environmental economics and completed graduate studies in environmental and natural resource economics. Tom also has a B.Eng. and M.Eng. in environmental engineering, as well as certificates in sustainable business and environmental impact assessment. Tom is a qualified GHG verifier and is also trained as an ISO 14001 EMS Lead Auditor.
Patrick Hardy, ClimateCHECK
Patrick Hardy is Co-Founder of ClimateCHECK. He is a leading expert
on greenhouse gas quantification, validation and verification for
technologies, projects and company inventories. Patrick has been
extensively involved with the development of GHG standards and protocols,
including co-chair of the Canadian Advisory Committee for Climate
Change, Canadian representative for the International ISO 14064
meetings and road-testing the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol for Projects.

Patrick is the main author of a GHG handbook including guidance
and case studies on the application of the ISO 10464-1 standard-GHG
quantification and reporting at the organizational level and also
developed and delivered GHG training material for both the Canadian
government and previous employers.
Prior to founding ClimateCHECK, Patrick was the Manager of Climate
Change Services for a leading international certification body.
Patrick managed the verification of major international customers
for their world-wide GHG inventory, and delivered consulting, validation,
verification and training services to numerous clients.
Patrick managed the GHG Measurement and Reporting for the Government
of Canada’s GHG technology investment fund. His work included
developing and delivering GHG validation/verification courses, developing
sector protocols based on the ISO GHG standard and managing staff,
internal and external resources to develop measurement and reporting
plans, evaluate scientific and technical reports, and to perform
GHG evaluations/validations for funded projects.
Before starting work on climate change, Patrick was the Lab Manager
for a leading Canadian bio-fuel technology company. Patrick’s
responsibilities included managing staff, verifying and reporting
lab results and developing and implementing the QA/QC systems. He
was also responsible for research and development activities including
the identification and extraction of new compounds from bio-oil,
the development of new types of resins and the development and implementation
of new test plans. Patrick has a Bachelor in Biology and an Applied
Degree in Biotechnology.
Taryn Fransen , World Resources Institute
Taryn, along with Angel Hsu, has developed our “Organizational
GHG Accounting: State of the Art” course.
Taryn Fransen is a Senior Associate with the GHG Protocol Initiative
at the World Resources Institute, where she oversees the design
and implementation of GHG management programs in developing countries.
Her expertise includes corporate- and project-level GHG accounting
and reporting, GHG program design, corporate climate change strategy,
and environmental markets.+++ Prior to joining WRI, Ms. Fransen was
Associate Program Officer at the United Nations Foundation, where
she co-managed a portfolio of projects to engage institutional investors
on climate change issues and attract financing for sustainable energy
development. She has also served as a consultant on markets for
ecosystem services for the World Wildlife Fund, and as Business
Solutions Fellow at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. Ms.
Fransen holds an M.S. and B.S. in Earth Systems from Stanford University.
She has worked internationally in Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines,
South Korea, India, Guatemala, and Costa Rica and is fluent in English
and Spanish.
Angel Hsu, World Resources Institute
Angel Hsu supports the GHG Protocol Initiative’s developing
country initiatives in the Philippines, China, Brazil, Mexico, and
India. She also manages the GHG Protocol website, quarterly newsletter,
and outreach. Her expertise includes corporate GHG accounting and
reporting and GHG program design. Prior to joining WRI, she completed
a Master's degree in Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge
in England and a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Political Science
from Wake Forest University. She has also conducted research in
Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, and Taiwan. She is fluent in English
and Mandarin Chinese.
Rob
Fowler, Abatement Solutions - Asia Pacific (AS-AP)
Rob, along with ClimateCHECK, will be developing our “Project-level
GHG Accounting: State of the Art” course.
Rob Fowler is Managing Director of Abatement Solutions - Asia Pacific.
He is recognised globally as an expert in the design and implementation
of market-based mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Based
in Sydney, Australia, he is a regular presenter at international
climate change conferences and workshops across Europe, North America
and Asia.+++
Through his role with AS-AP, Rob provides a range of services covering
climate change policy, carbon finance capacity building, offsets
frameworks, project structuring, and carbon strategy development.
Rob is an active member of the UNFCCC’s expert register and
provides adviceto the CDM Executive Board on new methodologies,
registration of projects and accreditation of verifiers. He is a
member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the CDM Gold Standard,
and has contributed to the development of standards and protocols
including the WBCSD/WRI GHG Project Protocol, the international
standard ISO14064, and the Australian Standard for carbon accounting
in forests.
Closer to home, Rob is best known for his work with the Australian
State-based “New South Wales Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme”
(GGAS), where from August 2003 to June 2006 he drove the implementation
and development of many of the scheme’s abatement frameworks,
including coal-fired power generation, carbon sequestration in forests,
and the distribution of energy efficient light bulbs. He trained
auditors, developed administration workflow tools, and educated
a wide variety of participants on the workings and opportunities
of this innovative scheme.
Cynthia Cummis , Clear Carbon Consulting
Ms. Cummis is the Director of Carbon Management at Clear Carbon
Consulting, managing carbon quantification and management projects
for multiple Fortune 500 clients.
She brings more than 11 years of experience working on the issue
of global climate change. Ms. Cummis was the founding Director of
U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders Program, a voluntary program that
partners with businesses to develop corporate-wide greenhouse gas
inventories and to develop corporate-wide greenhouse gas reduction
goals. +++
For more than 5 years,
she led the design and implementation of the program and oversaw
the growth of the program to more than 90 corporate Partners. Prior
to managing Climate Leaders, Ms. Cummis served as the Manager of
Strategic Projects for EPA’s Climate Wise program, aimed at
increasing energy efficiency among industrial companies. Ms. Cummis
served as a member of the Editorial Committee for the first version
of WRI/WBCSD’s GHG Protocol and a member of the Revision Working
Group for the revised edition. She also represented EPA as a member
of the International Standard Organization’s U.S. Technical
Advisory Group for development of ISO Standard 14064: a corporate
standard for measuring, reporting, and verifying GHG emissions.
She served as a key advisor in the design of the Climate Neutral
Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping organizations
and individuals achieve a net-zero impact on the Earth’s climate.
Ms. Cummis has presented at dozens of U.S. corporate climate change
conferences and has published numerous articles on approaches to
high-quality GHG management.
Timothy
Simmons
Tim will be developing our course on “GHG Accounting for
Stationary Combustion.”
After an early career in physics and operational research Tim turned
to energy statistics within the UK government statistical service
. This led him to take the post of Head of Energy Statistics in
the International Energy Agency for six years during which he became
closely involved with the early development of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines on national greenhouse
gas inventories. Over the last twelve years he has worked as a consultant
in the fields of energy statistics and GHG emissions methodology
and reporting for the European Commission, UK government, Danish
government and the IPCC.
Lisa
Ann Grice, ENVIRON International Corp.
Ms. Grice is an internationally known expert in sustainability
and greenhouse gas (GHG) management, accounting, and trading. She
has more than 20 years of experience advising private companies,
industry associations, local and federal governments. Her private
sector clients range across a broad range of sectors that include
oil and gas, manufacturing, power, and food and beverage. Ms. Grice
served in a senior role in development of the U.S. EPA’s Climate
Leaders program, a partnership program engaging more than 150 corporations
including 3M, St. Lawrence Cement, and Roche. She has received client
commendations for her help translating GHG and sustainable operations
visions into workable solutions.
Ms. Grice has a M.S. in Statistics from Stanford University, and
a Sc.B. in Energy Engineering from Brown University.
Jason Smith, ClimateCHECK
Jason Smith, along with Tom Baumann, has developed our Carbon Disclosure Project: How to Respond to Questionnaire course.
He is the vice president of key accounts for ClimateCHECK, a greenhouse gas (GHG) management services and solutions provider. In this role, he manages the company's marketing strategies and customer relations, as well as its operations in the U.S. Prior to ClimateCHECK, Jason was the executive director for LiveNeutral, a non-profit organization he co-founded and where he currently serves as Board Chair, which focuses on educating individuals and companies on how to reduce their carbon emissions. +++
During his tenure at LiveNeutral, Jason helped facilitate numerous CO2 offset and climate change education initiatives at major organizations, such as TransGroup Worldwide Logistics, American Electric Power, Williams-Sonoma and University of Colorado's Environmental Center.
Jason earned an MBA in sustainable management from Presidio School of Management and a bachelor's degree in Ethics and Religion at the University of Oklahoma, where he focused his studies on environmental ethics and economics . Jason also sits on the board of Climate Cycle, a fundraiser created to bring renewable energy to public schools across the country.
Penny Baalman, Managing Director, GHG Offset Services
Penny is a leading expert in the use of forest projects within carbon trading schemes, she has worked in the area since 1999 during which time she has been significantly involved in the development of standards for accounting and other policy and scheme instruments to allow for the credible creation of carbon certificates from forest projects.
She was responsible for the creation of the first scheme-approved carbon certificates from forests. This was within the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme (NSW GGAS); she was also significantly involved in the development of rules for the NSW GGAS, the first scheme in the world to allow for the creation of greenhouse certificates from forest projects. +++
She has been extensively involved in the standardization of forest greenhouse gas accounting. She was the main author of Standards Australia’s Interim Standard AS 4978.1(Int)-2002 Carbon Accounting for Greenhouse Sinks Part 1: Afforestation and Reforestation, this was the first voluntary consensus national standard in the area of greenhouse gas accounting in the world. She was the key ‘removals’ advisor to all three parts of ISO 14064 and one of the lead authors to Part 2 ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gases - Part 2: Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions and removal enhancements. She further participated as a road tester and reviewer for WRI/WBCSD’s GHG Protocol for Project Accounting and as one of the core drafters for their LULUCF Guidance for GHG Project Accounting.
As Det Norske Veritas’ (the main auditor within Kyoto Protocol) Global Forestry Manager - Climate Change Services, Penny also updated the CDM/JI Validation and Verification Manual (VVM) to include reporting templates for afforestation and reforestation CDM projects and was among the first group of approved auditors for the CCAR.
Raymond C. Pilcher , Raven Ridge Resources
Raymond C. Pilcher has devoted most of his 33-year career to energy project development and management in the fields of coalbed and coal mine methane, underground coal gasification, and other energy and mineral resources. He is an internationally recognized expert in coalbed/coal mine methane resource assessment, development and utilization and an expert on coal mine methane capture and use practices in China. Mr. Pilcher is the author and co-author of numerous published reports and papers concerning coalbed methane and coal mine methane resource evaluation, economics and marketing.+++
As president of Raven Ridge Resources, Incorporated, his experience and responsibility comprises corporate and strategic planning, as well development of new business and project opportunities worldwide. Raven Ridge Resources, Incorporated, is a geological and engineering consulting firm that has provided expertise to private and public sectors for 20 years. Mr. Pilcher provides leadership in projects conducted for government and private sector clients looking to explore for and develop coalbed methane and other energy resources. He has worked on coal mine methane-related projects in support of U.S. EPA’s Climate Protection Program since 1990 and is currently the Program Manager for RRR’s contract with U.S. EPA to provide Technical Support for Reduction of Methane Emissions from Coal Mining. Mr. Pilcher was instrumental in developing coal mine methane projects in China and India funded by the Global Environmental Facility.
Raven Ridge has supported the development of several CDM projects in China. Mr. Pilcher lead the RRR team that developed two of the first coal mine methane project design documents submitted. These were two of the first registered with UNFCCC. He also contributed to developing a methodology that was incorporated in the UNFCCC consolidated methodology for coalmine methane capture and use. In 2007, Mr. Pilcher took the lead in authoring the methodology entitled “Methodology for Coal Mine Methane and Abandoned Mine Methane Capture and Destruction Projects”, which underpins Greenhouse Gas Services’ voluntary carbon emissions reduction business in the coal mining sector. He is a member of the bureau for the UNECE Committee on Sustainable Energy Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and is the Chairman of its Task Force on Improving Mine Safety through the Extraction & Use of Coal Mine Methane.
Chad Leatherwood, SCS Engineers
Chad Leatherwood is a Senior Project Professional with SCS Engineers. He has over 14 years of experience in environmental engineering; specializing in landfill gas energy projects, emission trading markets, air permitting, and pulp and paper processes. Mr. Leatherwood currently provides expertise related to the development of greenhouse gas emission credits from landfill operations.+++
In 2007, he was the lead author for the Landfill Gas Methodology used by GE Greenhouse Gas Services. He also provides consulting services for both private and municipally-owned landfill operators on the applicability of domestic greenhouse gas markets to such operations. At SCS, he has co-developed and delivered three separate greenhouse gas seminars for interested parties. Additionally, he works with various landfill owners to structure greenhouse gas purchase agreements.
In addition to his work with greenhouse gases, Mr. Leatherwood also works with the development and permitting of landfill gas to energy projects. He has managed several projects supporting U.S. EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program both domestically and internationally over the past 6 years.
Prior to his work in the landfill sector, Chad was primarily involved in the air emission field. He has worked in industry as the Air Compliance Coordinator for a large pulp and paper facility and led the preparation of that facility for compliance with a NOx cap-and-trade program. Mr. Leatherwood also spent several years as a consultant to both private industry and to EPA.
Chad currently serves on the Technical Advisory Committee for GE Greenhouse Gas Services and is an Executive Board member for the EnergyXchange Renewable Energy Center in Yancey County, NC.
Mr. Leatherwood received an M.S. in from the Institute of Pulp and Paper Science and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from N.C. State University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer the State of North Carolina.
Kathryn Bickel
Kathryn Bickel is developing our course on “Organizational GHG Accounting for Forests” and serves on the Advisory Board for the GHG Management Institute.
Kathryn is an expert on greenhouse gas accounting and climate change policy for agriculture and forestry. During her career, she helped developed leading international, national (United States), and local (California) GHG accounting guidelines for these sectors. Her expertise spans national, organizational, and project-level GHG accounting. Kathryn also developed agriculture and forestry GHG inventories for the U.S. government and several U.S. states. In addition, she supports development of comprehensive, multi-sector climate policy plans aimed at helping U.S. states achieve GHG reduction goals. +++
Kathryn’s climate change career began in 2001 when she joined the Global Change Program Office of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and later the Climate Change Division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). In these positions, she staffed advisors to lead administrators, served on and supported U.S. delegations at international climate change meetings, and became a GHG inventory expert for the U.S. government. She was a lead author on multiple IPCC methodology reports, editor for the U.S. Agriculture and Forestry GHG Inventory, and contributor to the annual U.S. Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks. She also contributed to revising the GHG accounting methods for the U.S. Department of Energy Voluntary GHG Reporting Program (1605b). In 2006, Kathryn moved with her family to Los Angeles, California where she continues her work on climate change as an independent consultant.
Kathryn holds a Masters of Environmental Management (M.E.M.) from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Integrative Biology from the University of California at Berkeley.
Stephen Seres, Economist
Stephen Seres is an economist working exclusively on climate change policy issues for the past eight years. As an independent consultant, Stephen worked with the public and private sectors on files mainly revolving around the Kyoto mechanisms, and the monitoring and verification of greenhouse gas emissions.
As a full time consultant to Canada’s Clean Development Mechanism and Joint implementation Office (CDM&JI Office), Stephen participated in the negotiations on the decisions to the Kyoto protocol at the annual Conferences of the Parties. He further provided analytical support to the office and published summary reports of Marrakech Accords. +++
Stephen remained a consultant to the Canadian government for several years, working with various groups tasked with the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. These groups included Canada’s large final emitter group who was responsible to set up a nationwide greenhouse gas reporting system and set sector reduction targets. It also included Canada’s national inventory group who is responsible in producing annual greenhouse inventories and reporting to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Stephen was also a contributor to the development of the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol for Projects (www.ghgprotocol.org) as best practice guidance on “how to do” GHG project accounting.
Stephen continues to work with the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn and the World Bank in Washington, providing analysis on CDM projects. He was the lead author in a significant report to the secretariat analysing technology transfer in the CDM (http://cdm.unfccc.int/index.html).
Stephen has a B.A. in economics and environmental science and completed a graduate studies in environmental and natural resource economics, obtaining a M.Sc. degree from McGill university. Stephen continues to contribute academically by publishing papers in peer reviewed journals.
Steve McDonough, ClimateCHECK
Steve McDonough is developing our course on “Setting Up a GHG Information System for Corporations and Organizations.”
Steve McDonough is Vice President of GHG Management Innovations and heads ClimateCHECK operations in the Eastern United States. Steve has worked in the environmental industry for the last 12 years in both the nonprofit and private sector. During the last 6 years, Steve has focused in the areas of sustainability, GHG management, environmental managements systems, and environmental performance and compliance information systems.+++
Prior to ClimateCHECK, Steve worked as a consultant for an environmental software company (Enviance) where he lead the development of their GHG management solution based on WRI/WBSCD GHG Protocol for Corporate Accounting and various U.S. voluntary programs. Prior to that, Steve worked as the Regional Manager for Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and worked with the U.S. Director of Sustainability and Climate Change Services providing policy analysis, market research, standards interpretation, and business development support. In addition, he became accredited to be an ISO 14001 auditor and conducted environmental management system audits for numerous Fortune 500 clients.
Steve has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Vermont.
Tom Johnson, ClimateCHECK
Tom Johnson is delivering our Basics of Project Level Accounting Course, and will also be developing a course on Municipal GHG Measurement and Management.
Tom is ClimateCHECK’s Vice President of Greenhouse Gas Management Solutions and head of the ClimateCHECK practice in Toronto, Ontario (Canada). He has held roles of progressively increasing seniority related to climate change and sustainability in both the private and not-for-profit sectors, and has worked on climate change projects since 2003.+++
Tom provides ClimateCHECK clients with a range of GHG measurement and management services, including performing project quantifications; developing GHG strategy papers and guidance documents for the government, not-for-profit and private sectors; performing validations of projects and protocols, such as those of the GE-AES Greenhouse Gas Services program; undertaking verifications of projects, corporate inventories and carbon neutral product claims; and assessing the GHG impacts of programs, management practices and sustainability initiatives, including a green IT procurement initiative for an organisation with over 65,000 employees. Specific project activity areas Tom has worked in include landfill gas, coal bed methane, waste water treatment, manufacturing, biofuels, wind, small hydro, transportation, and industrial projects.
Prior to joining ClimateCHECK, Tom was the Development Manager for a $550 million (CAD) fund that supported sustainable municipal infrastructure across Canada, where he developed a reporting system consistent with the ISO14065-2 GHG standard for project-level accounting and managed its application to over 125 sustainable municipal infrastructure projects with a total value of almost $2 billion.
In addition to his corporate roles, Tom served as a member of the Canadian technical committee responsible for the development of the International Organization for Standardization ISO14064/14065 suite of GHG standards, and participated for four years on a federal inter-departmental working group on the development of GHG tools and protocols.
Tom was educated at McGill University in Geography and Environmental Science, and has received formal training in GHG verification and in project management.
