Tom Baumann, Director, Strategic Solutions and Partnerships, Co-Founder
Tom Baumann is Co-founder and Director of Strategic Solutions and Partnerships at the GHG Management Institute. Tom is also Co-founder and CEO of ClimateCHECK, a GHG management services and solutions company. Tom has an established track record of conceiving visionary innovations and turning these into market leading solutions. Tom has worked in progressively
senior positions in the private sector, public sector and nonprofit sector since 1998 and he has worked on and managed over 150 assignments in nearly all market segments, ranging from clean technology R&D to corporate GHG management systems, to government policy and program design and implementation.
Tom is the Chair of the Climate Change Technology Sub-Committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Tom is also a member of
the United Engineering Foundation Founder Society Carbon Management Steering Committee. Tom is a member of the technical advisory committee to the Carbon Disclosure Standards Board. Tom is also a representative to the International Organization for Standardization Greenhouse Gas Standards
Sub-Committee (ISO TC207 SC7). Tom is a member on the WRI-WBCSD GHG Protocol for Supply Chain/Product Accounting working group.
Tom has been a major contributor to the development of the standards, tools, and systems to support GHG technologies as well as GHG credits for both
voluntary and regulated markets. Tom is the main author of the ISO 14064-2 International Standard for GHG Projects, which has been adopted by various GHG initiatives such as the Voluntary Carbon Standard, the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta. ISO 14064-2 also forms part of industry and sectoral GHG guidelines including the IPIECA GHG project guidelines. Tom was also a significant contributor to the development of the WRI-WBCSD GHG Protocol for Projects as best practice guidance on “how to do” GHG project accounting.
Prior to founding ClimateCHECK and the GHG Management Institute, Tom was Director of Climate Change Services for North America for Det Norske
Veritas. Prior to DNV, Tom developed and implemented the System of Measurement And Reporting of Technologies (SMART) for the Government of
Canada’s climate change Technology Early Action Measures Initiative - a government fund having invested in more than 140 GHG technology
demonstration projects with a total investment of more than $1.2 billion. The SMART has been adopted by Sustainable Development Technologies Canada, a leading green investment program. Prior to working with the Government of Canada, Tom was an environmental consultant developing techno-economic GHG models, strategic studies and market research.
Tom has a B.A. in environmental economics and completed graduate studies in climate change economics. Tom also has a B.Eng. and M.Eng. in environmental engineering, specializing in GHG modeling and clean energy technologies, as well as certificates in sustainable business and environmental impact assessment. Tom is a registered professional engineer in the Province of Ontario.
