GHGMI at COP29

The Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) faculty and staff will participate in the following events at the UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The events listed below will be updated to provide registration links (for virtual attendance), with recordings added (after the fact), and additional information as it becomes available.

Strengthening GHG Data Management and Mitigation in the Pacific: Lessons Learned and Future Pathways under the ETF, Paris Agreement, and Global Methane Pledge

Tuesday, Nov 12 – 2024 – 12:30-2:00 AZT | NDCP Pavilion

This side event will serve as a platform to link domestic priorities to Pacific political commitments of the Global Methane Pledge and the pathways to facilitate and enhance the relevant data foundation. The Pledge sets a global target to reduce human-caused methane emissions by 30% by 2030, from 2020 levels, by 2032.

Peer-to-peer exchange event for the Pacific region on the current state and perspectives on capacity building under the ETF and the Paris Agreement, utilizing advanced data management platforms.

This event offers an opportunity to discuss the lessons learned and future pathways from recent capacity-building projects and interventions in the Pacific Region, aimed at strengthening national GHG inventory systems and implementing advanced data management platforms for GHG data and information management.

 SAGE, an Activity Data Platform for GHG Emissions – Well-developed tools help climate MRV systems succeed

Wednesday, 13 Nov 2024 – 15:00-16:30 AZT | Shirvan – Special Event Room 16, Together4Transparency Pavilion

This event will introduce the SAGE platform, a solution for collecting activity data. Parties will share their plans for using SAGE alongside estimation and reporting tools to “process” messy and raw data into complete and clean, “usable” data required for GHG inventory and NDC estimation and reporting.

Satellites, AI, and more! Open access data and digital tools to help countries and other stakeholders meet their ETF goals

Wednesday, Nov 13 2024 – 16:45-18:15 AZT | Special Event Room 8

The side event will focus on some of the latest innovations and globally available free data products and solutions that are making it much faster and easier to measure greenhouse gas emissions comprehensively. The event will feature experts who will showcase new, free, and open GHG measurement products currently being used by governments and companies to accelerate significantly and simplify the process of producing inventories and mitigation assessments. This event will be of interest to GHG inventory coordinators, expert reviewers, researchers, and nonprofits seeking to learn about emerging techniques and data that can be utilized under the Enhanced Transparency Framework, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and other GHG reporting frameworks.

Alumni in Action: A Celebration of Collective Progress on Transparency

Thursday, Nov 14, 2024 – 18:30-19:30 AZT | Shirvan – Special Event Room 16, Together4Transparency Pavilion

Alumni will share their experience working on climate-related issues with capacity-
building implementation partners and transparency experts. Their perspective is crucial for defining the next cycle of cooperation in transparency. The event will focus on recognizing our appreciation for the efforts of our alumni. We’ll have the opportunity to reconnect around transparency and take away ideas to propose capacity-building support. Please join us for an alumni celebration, an informal opportunity to meet GHGMI and UNFCCC staff, as well as other GHGMI alumni.

The Central Africa Women’s Initiative for Climate Action (WICA)

Invited panelists will share their perspectives on how this program has contributed to the growth and sustainability of expertise in the sub-region and beyond.
