A Global Professional Certification for Greenhouse Gas Management

The Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI), in partnership with ECO, is launching a new global certification program for the world’s leading professionals in carbon management. While there are existing programs for accrediting organizations that provide GHG validation and verification services, our profession lacks a trusted professional certification program for individual GHG management practitioners. But that’s about to change.

ECO and GHGMI have led the development of the Occupational Standards (OS) for GHG professionals —and now we’ve opened the draft to public comment. These Occupational Standards will help inform the competencies and knowledge elements utilized within the EP(GHG) certification. This comment period for version 1.0 will close on November 15th at 5:00 PM EST. We’d love to get your input through completion of these two steps:

Review the Occupational Standards    Submit Your Comments

This initiative aims to:

  1. Develop and validate a comprehensive OS dictionary of competencies and knowledge required of GHG professionals;
  2. Create an occupational standard that reflects the complexity and diversity of work in the field; and
  3. Support  GHG management professional certification.

This work will help ensure the global GHG workforce is equipped to support credible climate action and meet the demands of a fast-evolving global landscape.

What Are Occupational Standards?

Occupational standards are industry-developed and validated documents that identify and group competencies associated with a particular occupation (in this case, GHG professionals) at a particular point in time. They also describe the knowledge and skills that a worker must demonstrate to be considered competent. An occupational standard may be updated as the required occupational knowledge and skills change within the profession.

WHY CERTIFICATION?

Global EP(GHG) Certification

There is a growing demand for reliable greenhouse gas (GHG) management, accounting, reporting, analysis, and verification work globally. Over time, there will be deeper and growing number of voluntary and regulatory drivers, including mandatory GHG reporting; regulatory and voluntary carbon markets; Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosures; net-zero transition planning; and value chain mitigation GHG assessments, among others. And now all countries under the Paris Agreement must conduct rigorous biennial GHG reporting and mitigation tracking.

With increasingly mature demands of on our profession comes the risk that it may not be adequately staffed with well-skilled and highly ethical practitioners. We cannot afford a lack of technical competency or integrity to undermine the credibility of voluntary actions or regulations. Similarly, as companies need to expand their talent pool within this field, they require a trusted and reliable benchmark of competency to hire. But, critically, professionalization must support and provide a path to newcomers, not as a barrier to entry.

By Earning this Certification, You Will:

✔  Gain professional distinction in a meaningful field.
✔  Be part of a global network of elite GHG professionals.
✔  Verify your expertise to employers, clients, and regulators.
✔  Elevate your company’s profile above your competitors.
✔  Stay current with developments in the field and maintain your certification.
✔  Help build an ethics-focused professional community that mentors new entrants to the field
✔  Enhance public and policy-maker trust in GHG reporting, analysis, and verification.
