OUR MOTIVATION

Why Carbon Markets Need Scrutiny

Carbon pricing mechanisms—such as carbon credits—are a central tool in the global response to climate change. While these markets offer the promise of cost-effective climate action, they also pose serious risks when misused or poorly designed. GHGMI exists to improve the effectiveness and credibility of carbon markets through independent evaluation, methodological improvements, and stakeholder education.

Carbon Credit Quality Evaluation

At the methodological and project levels, GHGMI rates and assesses carbon credit methodologies and projects through initiatives such as the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), the Carbon Credit Quality Initiative (CCQI), Calyx Global, and on an ad hoc basis.

Methodological Improvements

Building upon the rigorous rating and assessment of projects and methodologies in which GHGMI identifies methodological issues and gaps that may be exploitable by bad actors, GHGMI works with crediting programs to improve and revise methodologies.
