Advancing Professional Development in GHG Accounting: Event with Michael Gillenwater

Date: Tuesday, May 19
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 PM PDT
Location: 9Zero Climate Innovation Hub, Seattle, Washington

The field of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and management is rapidly evolving—and with it, the need for clear professional standards, training, and certification.

We’re excited to share that our Executive Director, Michael Gillenwater, will be speaking at an upcoming event hosted by 9Zero in Seattle. This session will explore how professionals can build credible, recognized careers in GHG accounting, measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV). If you’re located in the Seattle area, we’d love to see you there!

Why GHG Accounting Certification and Professional Development Matter

As organizations worldwide strengthen their climate commitments, the demand for skilled practitioners continues to grow. However, unlike fields such as financial accounting or engineering, GHG management has historically lacked a formalized system of professional certification and ethics.

This is beginning to change with the introduction of the Environmental Professional in Greenhouse Gas — EP®(GHG) designation. Developed by the GHGMI and ECO Foundation, the EP®(GHG) is the first globally recognized credential for GHG practitioners, aligned with ISO 17024 standards.

During this session, Michael will discuss:

  • Career pathways in GHG accounting and MRV
  • The structure and value of the EP®(GHG) certification
  • Specializations across inventory accounting, verification, climate finance, and policy
  • Emerging trends in key standards such as the GHG Protocol and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
