What Makes the Capstone Academy Different?

WHY IT MATTERS

Technical Expertise Builds GHG Inventories. Leadership Turns Them into Action.

GHG management has strong technical foundations: the IPCC Guidelines, the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, and science-based targets. But technical expertise alone doesn’t reduce emissions.

Inventories stall when departments don’t share data. Scope 3 programs struggle when suppliers see reporting requests as a burden rather than an opportunity to collaborate. Even well-designed climate strategies can fail without the relationships needed to put them into practice.

Effective GHG managers know how to work across departments, organizations, and sectors, including with people who may have different priorities or perspectives.

The Capstone Academy helps you develop these skills through practical exercises, peer collaboration, and hands-on work with challenges you face in your own organization.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Six Practical Leadership Skills

Build the skills that move GHG programs forward. Alongside hands-on work on your own task, the Capstone Academy builds six practical leadership skills that move GHG programs from disclosure to delivery.

JUSTIFICATION FOR EMPLOYER SUPPORT

Bring More Than Knowledge Back to Your Organization

The Capstone Academy is designed around work your organization already needs to accomplish. Rather than attending a workshop and returning with general knowledge alone, you’ll bring a real GHG management challenge, test approaches with experienced practitioners and peers, and return with a more developed plan for moving it forward.

You’ll also strengthen the skills that make GHG programs successful: engaging stakeholders, collaborating across departments, communicating business value, and developing credible climate claims.

Seeking employer support? Download our guide and share the brochure with your manager alongside a brief description of the challenge you’d like to address and the outcomes you hope to bring back.

THE VENUE

Confluence Center, Missoula, Montana

The Capstone Academy will be held at the Headwaters Foundation’s Confluence Center, a downtown Missoula venue where leaders and organizations meet, solve problems, and plan together. Built in 1891, it is fully accessible, equipped with modern audiovisual technology, and offers an intimate setting for up to 25 participants.

At 119 West Main Street, participants can easily walk to restaurants, the Clark Fork River trail system, and multiple lodging options. Missoula sits at the confluence of rivers, where separate waterways come together and flow forward as one, a fitting home for an Academy that brings together GHG practitioners from different sectors.

FAQs

What is the GHGMI Capstone Academy?

The Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) Capstone Academy is a three-day, in-person workshop in Missoula, Montana, from March 15 to 17, 2027. Instead of lectures, it’s built around a real GHG accounting or management challenge that each participant brings. Working in small peer groups with GHGMI faculty, you’ll test approaches, get feedback, and build six practical leadership skills: influencing without authority, speaking the language of finance, engaging suppliers and data providers, building coalitions, communicating credibly, and facilitating change. You’ll leave with a clearer path forward and a network of colleagues to call on afterward.

Who should attend?

The Academy is designed for experienced practitioners in the private or public sector whose GHG work depends on collaborating with others, such as colleagues in other departments, suppliers, executives, peers, or even competitors. To attend, you must be an alum of a GHGMI training course or workshop or hold a current EPt(GHG) or EP®(GHG) certification. If you don’t meet either requirement yet, you can still register. Your registration includes a GHGMI online course, and completing it between January 20 and March 15, 2027 makes you eligible. The group is capped at 25 participants, so everyone gets real time with peers and faculty.

I haven’t taken a GHGMI course yet. Can I still register?

Yes. Every registration includes one GHGMI online course of your choice, with access opening on January 20, 2027. The courses are self-paced, so you’ll have nearly two months to finish before the Academy begins on March 15. Completing the course makes you a GHGMI alum and meets the eligibility requirement. If you already hold a current EPt(GHG) or EP®(GHG) certification, or you’re an alum of a GHGMI training course or workshop, you’re eligible now.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. GHGMI is offering two scholarships that cover some or all of the registration fee. They’re open to applicants worldwide and are meant for early-career professionals who want to strengthen their GHG management skills and grow their professional networks. We select recipients based only on their application responses, as part of our commitment to bringing together a diverse group. Scholarships don’t cover travel, accommodations, or other personal expenses. Please apply by December 1, 2026. We’ll share decisions by December 4, so successful applicants have time to register and pay any required deposit by December 16.

Is there a discount for registering with a colleague?

Yes. The first 10 companies to register two or more employees receive a US$300 discount. We issue it as a refund once the second person registers. Eligibility is based on the order in which we receive second registrations, and everyone in the group needs to work for the same company. If you’re not sure whether your group qualifies, please contact the Registrar at Registrar@ghginstitute.org.

What happens if I can’t attend after registering?

You can transfer your seat to a colleague at no cost if you let us know before February 16, 2027. If you must cancel, take note of the cancellation terms below. If you cancel:

  • On or before January 16: your US$500 deposit becomes a credit toward a future GHGMI course or workshop (valid for one year), or you can donate it to the GHGMI Scholarship Fund.
  • From January 17 to February 16: you’ll receive a US$2,000 refund. We keep the deposit and a US$500 cancellation fee, and we waive that fee if your seat is filled from the waitlist.
  • After February 16: refunds aren’t available, though partial credit may be considered case by case.
What happens if not enough people register?

The Capstone Academy needs at least 15 participants to run. If we don’t reach that number, GHGMI will cancel the workshop and let everyone who registered know by January 20, 2027. You’ll receive a full refund of everything you’ve paid, including your deposit. GHGMI can’t cover travel or lodging costs, so we recommend waiting until we confirm the workshop on January 20 before you book anything.

What kind of challenge should I bring, and what if mine isn’t fully formed yet?

Bring a GHG management task you’re working on right now, such as a first-time Scope 3 screening, a base-year recalculation, preparing for verification, a supplier engagement strategy, or building agreement around an emissions reduction target. After you register, you’ll write a one-page summary of your goal, where you’re stuck, and what input would help you most. It doesn’t need to be perfect. You’ll meet with an instructor before the Academy to shape it, and we use the summaries to form your peer groups.

When should I book my travel?

Please wait until after January 20, 2027, when we’ll confirm that the workshop will run. It needs at least 15 participants. Plan to arrive on Sunday, March 14, and leave on Thursday, March 18, since the program requires full participation from Monday to Wednesday. If GHGMI cancels the workshop, we’ll refund all deposits and fees in full, but we can’t cover travel or lodging costs. If you’ll need a visa to visit the United States, we’d recommend starting that process early.

What is Missoula like in March?

Expect winter conditions. Snow and cold days are possible, so pack warm layers, a good coat, and shoes that can handle snow and ice. We’ve planned the program with that in mind, including walking breaks along the Clark Fork River, a field trip, and fresh, locally sourced food. If you have time on Thursday, March 18, before you head home, you can ski at Missoula Snowbowl, visit museums like the Missoula Art Museum and Fort Missoula, or try local favorites such as Montgomery Distillery and Kettle House Brewing.
