401 GHG Verification for Inventories and Projects

$400$750

This course provides an overview of existing GHG verification approaches and a step-by-step process to planning, executing and completing a GHG verification.

Many governments and organizations are taking action to manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are a cause of climate change. Verifying GHG emissions inventories, emission offset projects, supply chain carbon footprints and other activities provide assurance to stakeholders about the validity of performance claims.

This training course for GHG verification of inventories and projects includes:

  • An overview of existing GHG verification approaches such as ISO 14064 Part 3 and the UNFCCC Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Validation and Verification Manual
  • A step-by-step process to planning, executing and completing a GHG verification
  • Reference case studies including verification GHG inventory developed according to the WRI-WBCSD GHG Protocol for Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and GHG projects developed according to ISO 14064 Part 2

The material in this course uses ISO 14064 Part 3 as a framework for organizing and instructing your lessons on GHG Verification. This ISO standard is a policy-neutral and program-neutral International Standard. Each learner will be able to download a personal copy of ISO 14064: Part 3 as part of this course.

The material in this course is relevant to many GHG programs around the world, including the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Joint Implementation (JI) and Climate Action Registry (CAR) projects, as well as GHG verifications for The Climate Registry and the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS).

The course includes quizzes and exercises to help you learn to apply key lessons.  A Certificate of Proficiency is available for an additional fee and requires the passing of a comprehensive half-day exam.

Key concepts covered include:

  • Planning the verification according to fundamental issues of scope, criteria, objectives, level of assurance and materiality
  • Reviewing documentation, controls and procedures
  • Assessing inherent, control and detection risks
  • Determining verification activities, sampling and data testing
  • Performing the verification
  • Recording findings and making verification conclusions
  • Developing the verification report and statement
