Help Us Train the Next Generation of Climate Professionals

From our incorporation in 2009, the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) has had a mission: to respond to the urgent need for qualified professionals dedicated to actively reversing climate change. What we’ve learned along the way is that the talent, passion, and desire are out there; accessibility is often what holds back progress. That’s where GHGMI’s Scholarship Fund comes into play—and the donors that make it possible.

100% of every donation goes directly to learner scholarships—supporting individuals, groups, or whole cohorts.

Around the globe, over 1,500 learners have received support from the Scholarship Fund. Nearly every country and many companies have promised to measure and reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Far fewer have enough trained people to do it well. Right now, we invite you to help close that gap by donating to the GHGMI Scholarship Fund.

Support Climate Action

Why the Scholarship Fund is so Important Right Now

Whether July brings you news of lethal heat waves and wildfires in the Northern Hemisphere or appeals for economic resilience and energy transition in the Southern Hemisphere, the need for climate professionals has never been greater, and the industry will undoubtedly see rising demand in the coming decades.

Yet, the essential work of climate action rests on people who often go unseen: the professionals who build GHG inventories, verify the numbers, and manage carbon emissions. The world needs far more of them than it currently has, and in many countries, the opportunity to train for this work has been harder to come by than the talent and determination to do it.

And the demand keeps growing: Over the past five years, requests for GHGMI scholarships to access our training have grown 13x. The talent and the will are clearly there. What’s missing, so often, is simply access.

And there’s a deeper reason this matters. Most of our scholarship learners come from areas that have had fewer chances to build this expertise locally, and frequently end up paying a premium for outside consultants to carry out climate work that their own professionals could (and should) lead. Supporting a scholarship isn’t only about training people quickly. It’s about giving talented people a fair shot to compete in this field, and helping their countries build climate capacity they can rely on for years—on their own terms.

How Your Support Makes an Impact

Since launching our financial aid program, we’ve had the privilege of helping more than 1,500 learners access rigorous training in GHG accounting, auditing, verification, and carbon management—through programs like our Diploma in Carbon Management. For many, a scholarship is the difference between watching climate action from the sidelines and helping lead it at home.

Over the coming weeks, keep an eye on our social media and your inbox, where we’ll share stories from recipients around the world so you can see exactly what your support helps make real. In the meantime, get to know a few here:

Meet Nelson Alcantar

Take Nelson Alcantar, a learner from Colombia, for example. Nelson is an electrical engineer who spent his career working as a remote consultant. But after completing GHGMI courses, he stepped into a role as a contractor for the Colombian government, helping produce the country’s national reports (the GHG inventories and progress updates that governments prepare to track their climate commitments).

And that data matters, because Colombia has a lot at stake. Climate change is intensifying floods and droughts, melting the country’s glaciers, and putting pressure on agriculture and everyday safety. When temperatures and sea levels rise, what happens to a country like Colombia depends heavily on the quality of the decisions its people make, and those decisions are only as good as the information behind them. As Nelson told us, with the help of our Scholarship Fund, he gained the formal foundation he needed to help strengthen Colombia’s reporting, so the people making climate decisions have a more solid ground to stand on.

What Other Recipients Are Doing

Nelson is just one example of how the GHGMI Scholarship Fund has helped build capacity among climate professionals worldwide. There’s also Mamadou Welle, a project manager in Senegal who works on climate adaptation and mitigation in natural resources management. Emre Akçaoğlu works in Turkey’s textile industry, using GHGMI education to develop innovative solutions tailored to the industry’s unique emissions challenges. Then there’s Samran Ali, who works on electricity demand forecasting across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

What all of these professionals have in common is that they faced a financial barrier to getting the education they needed to fulfill their professional development. With financial aid, they were able to take GHGMI’s courses and apply their newfound knowledge and skills to improve climate action in their communities. That right there is the heart of our organization.

How you can help

It’s simple: support a learner, strengthen the entire field. Donating to GHGMI’s Scholarship Fund is the best way to help us provide training to professionals around the world. Remember, 100% of every donation goes directly to learner scholarships—supporting individuals, groups, or whole cohorts.

Any amount you can contribute to our collective impact. However, you’re welcome to donate to one of our giving levels. In addition to becoming a member of GHGMI, each level receives a benefit as a token of our appreciation. The benefits are cumulative, so you’ll receive the benefits of all the levels at and below your designated gift.

Any gift helps our learners receive the education they need to grow skills to tackle the ever-growing challenges of climate change. If this is the kind of climate work you’d like to be part of, we’d be so grateful to have you with us. Thanks for your support!
